Good afternoon everyone, I hope you’ve had a good start to the week. A massive thank you to all who came to the AGM, and to Steve for Chairing it. A quick one this week as there’s not much. However, do take a look at the ‘Other Events’ section… some great things to go and see!
What we did – 2nd November
- We began with This is the Truth, really trying to work on blend, accuracy of notes, and of contrast between verses. Make sure we have those markings in please!
- We looked at the Kyrie from the Mass, going through it together, and then noting the opening of the Kyrie is the same as the ending of the Agnus Dei.
- We then split into sectionals to work on the Kyrie and the Credo, going through the notes and helping you find your starting notes from the accompaniment.
- After the break we came back together to work on the Kyrie, putting together those sections we did in sectionals, and it felt much more secure.
- We did the opening of the Credo, and then learnt the rhythms and words on page 23, bar 80. Well done with this, make sure you practice it at home to get those rhythms under your teeth!
- We ended with a bit of work on The Angel Gabriel, checking notes were ok in verse 3.
To Catch Up: If you missed this rehearsal, please make sure you’re happy with your notes in the Kyrie and Credo of the Mass. Please also look at The Angel Gabriel
What we’ll do – 9th November
We’ll start by going through The Angel Gabriel, and then do some work on On Jordan’s Bank. After this we’ll break into sectionals again, to work on:
S/A – the opening of the Credo, and then the Gloria
T/B – the ending of the Credo, and then the Gloria.
S/A you’ll be with Fiona, T/B will be with me.
We’ll come back at the end to put it together.
As a ‘heads-up’ for next week (16th) – I’d like to try to run as much of the Mass as possible, so please come with that prepared. We’ll then do lots of work on this.
Marked Score
Attached is the marked score for this term. I ask that you please put in the markings into your parts. Having things like where to breathe already marked in the score will save so much time in rehearsals. Thank you all for your time with this!
Learning Resources
The Spotify playlist HERE contains most of the pieces. To get an idea of the programme, this is your best place to start.
The main work of the concert, the Haydn Missa Sancti Nicolai, has two places you can find learning tracks to help you out, so pick your poison.
The first is Choralia – a little tinny, but you can slow it down and add other parts to help, so it’s quite useful. It’s available HERE
The second is Cyberbass – again, not the best quality, but is certainly useful. It’s available HERE
The Palestrina Matin Responsory has learning tracks available HERE
Mendelssohn’s How lovely are the messengers is from his piece St Paul. On this link it’s number 26, available HERE
Finally, the Vaughan Williams This is the truth is available on YouTube. Here are the links: Soprano – Alto – Tenor – Bass
AGM Follow Up
As I said at the start, thank you so much for the good AGM – some good discussions, and a lot agreed upon. I’m sure the notes will be shared soon.
I’m so pleased to know that so many of you would like to do a summer term too. I’ll put a plan together and give it to the committee… we’ll hopefully have some dates in the diary for you all very soon.
Other Forthcoming Events
Do check out these various forthcoming events, including some very exciting concerts that I’m conducting… it would be great to see some friendly faces at them!

That’s it for now, see you on the 9th November.
