Conductor’s Notes – Thursday 4th October

Good evening all, I hope you’re well and have had a good week. I’m so sorry to have missed last week’s rehearsal, I had the most god-awful fluey thing and barely slept a wink the night before! But, I’m fully recovered and looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow.

Before I give my notes below, a MASSIVE thank you to Janet for stepping in to conduct, and to Fiona for supporting her and the choir brilliantly. I’ve been told it was a good rehearsal and very useful to cover the bits you did. Thank you Janet and Fiona.

Janet tells me you managed to work on pages 13 & 14 of the mass, in the Gloria, joining the recapitulation of the main theme (the “Quoniam) with the “Amen” that we’d learnt the week before. Then you looked at the opening of the Gloria, in particular at the enormous range for the basses. After this you learnt verses 3 & 4 of On Jordan’s Bank part-by-part, breaking each one down. Then you looked at verse 3 of The Angel Gabriel, again breaking it down into parts. Finally, you ended with a look at This is the truth, again looking at each part individually.

I can’t wait to hear the progress you’ve made on these.

To Catch Up: If you missed this rehearsal, please have a look at On Jordan’s Bank, The Angel Gabriel, and This is the truth.

We’ll begin with a refresher of This is the truth, so I can hear the progress of it. Then we’ll split into sectionals for work on How lovely are the messengers, as well as the Credo and the “Amen” from the Gloria. S/A will be with me, and Fiona will kindly take T/B. We’ll end by coming back together and singign these bits through together.

Attached is the marked score for this term. I ask that you please put in the markings into your parts. Having things like where to breathe already marked in the score will save so much time in rehearsals. Thank you all for your time with this!

I’ll be sharing some resources to help you all learn the music this term, speeding up our rehearsal process, and giving you help at home. Firstly, please see the Spotify playlist HERE. It’s got most of our pieces on, so you can hear how it all goes, and sing along to it. More will be shared in the following weeks.

That’s it for now, see you all on Thursday!

Ben
